The Power of Dharma in Our Health and Wellness
Finding our dharma, or life purpose, can play a significant role in our health and wellness, and even recovery from illness and in dealing with fear, anxiety, stress and worry. Many students I’ve worked with have undergone major life changes during their coaching journey—changing careers, leaving toxic relationships, or finding ways to contribute to the world.
The Bhagavad Gita, one of our source texts, teaches that it’s better to do your own dharma imperfectly than someone else’s well. When you align with your unique purpose, life feels more fulfilling. Your dharma doesn’t have to be grand, but it should feel meaningful—whether that’s being a dedicated parent, a passionate artist, or contributing to a cause you care about.
How Living Your Dharma Impacts Health
Living without purpose can lead to physical and emotional challenges. A lack of meaning may undermine health, as individuals may struggle with motivation to make healthy choices. Chronic stress, emotional issues like anxiety and depression, and even physical ailments can arise when life feels empty.
Those who find their purpose often experience better overall health, as a sense of purpose supports both emotional and physical well-being. It’s crucial to cultivate a sense of meaning to foster resilience against stress and disease.
Discovering Your Dharma
No one else can tell you what your dharma is. The process of discovering your purpose requires inner reflection, which can be supported through yogic and coaching practices. Practices like inquiry, asana, pranayama, and chanting help calm the mind and quiet the noise of the outside world. When the mind is calm, the voice of inner wisdom becomes clearer.
For those ready, meditation is a powerful tool for accessing deeper insight into your purpose. While it may be challenging at first, regular practice can lead to profound shifts, including greater clarity on our life’s path.
